Salary:
This position is in pay schedule and range 05-63. The starting salary is between $25.00 - $28.00 per hour. A twelve month probationary period is required upon appointment to this position. Pay for current state employees will be set based on the rules of the Wisconsin Compensation Plan.

Become an integral member of our field services section with the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS), who is currently seeking to fill a Fire Prevention Coordinator position.

Who We Are:  The mission of the Department of Safety and Professional Services is to promote economic growth and stability while protecting the citizens of Wisconsin as designated by statute. DSPS and related professional boards protect the citizens of Wisconsin by ensuring the safe and competent practice of licensed professionals; performing inspections of commercial buildings, amusement rides, boilers, elevators, pressurized gas systems, and electrical systems; and performing plan reviews of commercial building, pluming, fire suppression, elevators, boilers, and private onsite wastewater treatments systems.

What We Are Looking For: DSPS is looking for a new member to join our Fire Prevention Program.  This individual will be familiar with applying the state fire code, firefighter health and safety requirements, and the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

Where We Are Located: This position is a mobile resource and will be home based.

Position Summary:   

  • Conduct fire prevention and safety inspections

  • Document code violations through photographs, reports, physical evidence, etc.

  • Assist in development of emergency planning activities related to fires, hazardous and flammable materials and disasters

  • Serve as a technical code consultant to DSPS code councils regarding the development, adoption and modification of DSPS codes

  • Act as the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) administrator and manage electronic records for fire departments within a specified geographical area

  • Develop and present training curriculum for fire departments, technical colleges, municipal governments and the public

  • Audit fire departments and their affiliated municipalities

Special Notes:   

A criminal background check will be required.

DSPS does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant to provide valid status to work in the United States.

Ability to travel statewide, independently as needed.

Qualifications:   

Minimally qualified candidates will have:

  • Experience conducting audits, inspections and/or investigations

  • Training and/or experience in Wisconsin Administrative code Chapters SPS 314, 332, or any other comparable local ordinance development codes

    • Well qualified candidates will have:
    • Experience conducting inspections and/or investigations of new, existing, remodeled, or altered buildings to determine compliance with fire safety and prevention codes and regulations

    • Experience developing and presenting training programs

    • Experience using fire incident reporting software such as the National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS)
