We are seeking Physical Therapist's to work in limited term employment positions* throughout the state.  We have a current vacancy at Stanley Correctional Institution in Stanley, WI (Chippewa County), New Lisbon Correctional Institution in New Lisbon, WI (Juneau County), and the Drug Abuse Correctional Center in Winnebago, WI (Winnebago County).  If you are interested in employment at other institutions, please submit your application materials and we will keep them on file and contact you if something comes up. 


*Temporary jobs are referred to as limited term employment (LTE). While limited term employment does not automatically lead to or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employment, these positions provide valuable work experience and an opportunity to explore different permanent job and career options at the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. Limited term employees receive the following benefits: Workers’ Compensation Unemployment Compensation Social Security Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) participation. Once a LTE has worked for 600 hours within a one year period, they begin participation in the WRS. Health insurance. Once a LTE begins participation in the WRS, they become eligible to enroll in the state health insurance program and pay the full premium. With six months of WRS participation eligibility begins for state participation, that is the state pays partial premiums. LTE’s are paid for holidays if asked to work.

Job Duties:   Under the general supervision of the Health Service Manager, this position provides physical therapy services to patients for both acute and chronic conditions. This includes performing physical therapy assessments, designing treatment programs and providing for implementation. Implementation may be by the physical therapist, by the physical therapy assistant, delegated to Health Service Unit staff, or a combination thereof. Responsible for training of Health Service staff in their responsibilities for implementation. Evaluates individual treatment programs on an ongoing basis and revises as appropriate.

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application.


Must be Wisconsin resident.


The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection.


Registration as a Physical Therapist in the State of Wisconsin. Certification in CPR and ability to perform CPR and maintain yearly re-certification procedure.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   

1. Extensive knowledge of current physical therapy theory and practice.


2. Ability to establish effective working relationships with health care personnel and other institutional personnel.


3. Ability to maintain helpful and understanding attitude toward patients.


4. Knowledge of effective oral and written communication techniques.


5. Ability to work in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural population.
