Salary:
LPN's are in pay schedule and range 06-14. Starting salary is $17.609 per hour. A six month probationary period will be required.

The department accepts LPN applications on a continuous basis for positions located at: Waupun Correctional Institution, Green Bay Correctional Institution, Taycheedah Correctional Institution, Dodge Correctional Institution, Racine Correctional Institution, Oshkosh Correctional Institution, Stanley Correctional Institution, and Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility.


The Department of Corrections administers Wisconsin’s state prisons, community correctional centers, and juvenile corrections programs. It supervises the custody and discipline of all prisoners in order to protect the public and seeks to rehabilitate offenders and reintegrate them into society.

Job Duties:   

Under general supervision of the Nursing Supervisor and registered nurses, this position is responsible for providing assigned health care services to incarcerated offenders.  The Licensed Practical Nurse in this position functions as a nursing team member in both infirmary and ambulatory settings. The LPN performs nursing procedures in situations, which require skilled technical care but do not require the direct supervision of the registered nurse. In highly complex situations, the LPN works under specific direction of the registered nurse. The LPN is responsible for performing duties assigned by the registered nurse including assisting the RN to care for acutely ill patients, assisting in assessment of residents' health needs, making observations, reporting to the RN, and performing related documentation and record management activities.

The department will perform a criminal background check on all applications prior to selection.


Qualified candidates must possess current Wisconsin licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse or must be eligible to obtain licensure.


Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   


  • Ability to assess patients by making accurate observations of signs and symptoms which indicate change in physical or mental condition of the patient.

  • Ability to protect patient by following established policies and standards concerning safety in nursing practice.

  • Ability to perform effectively in emergency situations, remain certified in CPR.

  • Knowledge of effects of medication and treatments.

  • Ability to assist patients to increased independence and self reliance as their condition allows.

  • Ability to carry out assigned duties and seeks and utilzed superivision appropriately.

  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Ability to maintain a helpful and understanding attitude toward the incarcerated individual exhibiting hostile or negative behavior.

  • Willingness to abide by security regulations established by the correctional institution.
