The Department of Corrections is seeking registered nurses to work as part of our float pool. We have four headquarter locations for the float pool, one at Dodge Correctional in Waupun, the second at Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility in Milwaukee, the third at Oshkosh Correctional Institution in Oshkosh, and the fourth at Oregon Correctional Center in Oregon. Applicants should indicate which area they wish to work.


Those headquartered at Dodge could be assigned to work at Dodge Correctional, Waupun Correctional, John Burke Correctional, or Fox Lake Correctional depending on the daily needs.


Those headquartered at Milwaukee could be assigned to work at Milwaukee Secure, Racine Correctional, Sturtevant Transitional, Robert E Ellsworth Correctional, Racine Youthful, Kenosha Correctional Center, Felmers O Chaney Correctional Center, Marshall Sherer Correctional Center or Milwaukee Women’s Correctional Center depending on the daily needs.


Those headquartered at Oshkosh could be assigned to work at Oshkosh Correctional Institution, Redgranite Correctional Institution, Taycheedah Correctional Institution , Green Bay Correctional Institution, Sanger Powers Correctional Center, Drug Abuse Correctional Center or Winnebago Correctional Center depending on the daily needs.


Those headquartered at Oregon could be assigned to work at Oregon Correctional Center, Thompson Correctional Center, Oakhill Correctional Institution, or Columbia Correctional Institution depending on the daily needs.

*Temporary jobs are referred to as limited term employment (LTE). While limited term employment does not automatically lead to or enjoy the same benefits as permanent employment, these positions provide valuable work experience and an opportunity to explore different permanent job and career options at the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.

Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) participation. Once a LTE has worked for 600 hours within a one year period, they begin participation in the WRS.


Health insurance. Once a LTE begins participation in the WRS, they become eligible to enroll in the state health insurance program and pay the full premium. With six months of WRS participation eligibility begins for state participation, that is the state pays partial premiums.


LTE’s are paid for holidays if asked to work

Job Duties:   

The Temporary Nurse is responsible for providing skilled nursing care to incarcerated adults in the state correctional facilities. This may include both ambulatory and infirmary settings. These skilled nursing duties include patient assessment and treatment, assisting the physician in providing medical services, management of medications provision if emergency care and maintenance of medical records. In addition, the Temporary Nurse is expected to participate in educational programs for staff and inmates and participate in activities to maintain her/his nursing skill level.


 

Special Notes:   


  • The Department of Corrections will conduct a criminal background check on applicants prior to selection.

  • Applicants must possess registration or eligibility for registration as a professional nurse in the State of Wisconsin.

  • Limited term employment may not exceed 1043 hours in the calendar year commencing on the anniversary date of hire.

  • Applicants must commit to a minimum of five eight-hour shifts per month, as availability permits.

  • Applicants will be scheduled for less than 40 hours per week.

  • Applicants will be expected to work a minimum of one weekend per month.

  • Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application.

  • Applicants must be a Wisconsin resident.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   


  • Considerable knowledge of current professional nursing theory and practice

  • Skill in the application of nursing practice in meeting specific needs of adults, including emergency care, in various areas of the institution.

  • Ability to work effectively with incarcerated adults and other disciplines in a team relationship.

  • Ability to work productively in an independent setting under general supervision.

  • Ability to maintain a helpful and understanding attitude toward the incarcerated adult exhibiting hostile or other negative behavioral traits.

  • Ability to work with a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural population.

  • Skill and ability to maintain CPR certification and to perform CPR.
