Correctional Nursing is a professional specialty area that is recognized around the world. It offers the opportunity to practice nursing in a unique atmosphere with other multi-discipline health care providers as well as autonomy and the opportuntity to participate as a leader in the treatment team concept. The Department of Corrections administers Assess and treat offenders under the professional direction of the Physician; independent management of direct and indirect care of offenders in collaboration with all disciplines employed or practicing within the Health Services Unit; plan, develop, implement and evaluate health care, education programs, and protocols to meet the needs of offenders with complex medical and/or psychiatric conditions. The Department of Corrections administers Must be licensed as a Professional Nurse by the Wisconsin Board of Nursing. Must be certified or eligible for certification as a nurse practitioner by a national certifying body approved by the Wisconsin Board of Nursing and eligible for prescriptive authority in the State of Wisconsin. Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application. The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.
