Salary:
Minimum starting salary is at least $135,383 per year plus excellent benefits. A 12-month probationary period is required. This position is in pay schedule and range 10-50.
Special Qualifications:
1. Possession of license to practice dentistry in the State of Wisconsin at time of employment. 2. Must be certified in basic CPR and achieve annual recertification. A dentist with a license in good standing in any U.S. state can apply for a license in Wisconsin by submitting an application to the Dept of Regulation & Licensing. (www.drl.state.wi.us) It costs about $60 and takes at least two months to acquire.

The Department of Corrections administers Wisconsin’s state prisons, community correctional centers, and juvenile corrections programs. It supervises the custody and discipline of all prisoners in order to protect the public and seeks to rehabilitate offenders and reintegrate them into society.

Job Duties:   

Under the general supervision of the Dental Director and administrative direction of the Health Services Manager, the incumbent is responsible for the practice of general dentistry and all matters requiring professional judgment; monitors dental disease, restores and maintains dental function, and assists in the maintenance of good dental health and well being of the inmates. Duties include the examination and evaluation of the oral condition of all inmates upon admission and at periodic intervals; performance of diagnostic, preventive, restorative, periodontic, endodontic, prosthodontics, adjunctive and emergency, and oral surgery; referral of specialized orthodontic and complex treatment to community specialists; direction of the clinical activities of ancillary dental personnel; assistance in completion and submission of monthly and annual dental activity reports; provision of dental health education on an individual and group basis; provision of care and maintenance of dental equipment, direction of infection control procedures and elimination of biohazards within the dental operatory. Provides assistance to the Dental Director in other related dental duties when not providing direct dental care.

Special Notes:   

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application.  The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection.  Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting. 


Possession of license to practice dentistry in the State of Wisconsin at time of appointment. 


Some positions require that you possess licensure at the time of interview, prior to appointment.


Must be certified in basic CPR and achieve annual recertification.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Thorough knowledge of the theory, principles and practice of general dentistry.  Skill in performing required dental procedures.  Must be physically able to perform with a high degree of skill the dental procedures described in this Position Description.  Ability to guide performance, monitor and evaluate the work of ancillary dental personnel.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associate personnel and services and to function in a team approach to health problems.  Interest in keeping abreast of new developments in dental and correctional health care and to participate in continuing education.
