The Wisconsin Department of Transportation in the Division of State Patrol is conducting a recruitment for Police Communications Supervisor for our vacancy in the Southwest Region Post Headquarters located in DeForest (Dane County).

Job Duties:   

This position directs the 24-hour operation of a tele-communications center and the employees who staff the facility. This includes: assisting with the hiring and training of communications personnel; providing liaison and technical expertise between the office and various public agencies; assisting in defining and developing policies and procedures; and is responsible for the administrative functions relating to communications.

Special Notes:   

The work in the Communications Center involves exposure to members of the public who may be hostile and pose a potential physical hazard. The work is of a solitary nature and often stressful due to accidents, fires, storms, emergencies, public disorders, etc. Work involves long hours, without relief, in a small area and with many pieces of communications equipment in operation. This position may be assigned to work nights, weekends, holidays and evening shifts. Continual and constant concentration is required to insure responses to all calls, signals and messages.


A criminal background check will be conducted during the initial stages of the hiring process. Applicants with felony convictions will not be considered unless they have received a pardon. Hired applicants will be subject to a hearing examination and fingerprinting. In addition, applicants may be required to take a typing (at least 25 words per minute to pass) and work simulation test.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Computer applications (CAD, phone systems, security systems, digital radio logging system, etc.); and making instantaneous decisions based on minimal information regarding hazardous radioactive materials, natural and man-made disasters and civil disturbances. Knowledge of law enforcement computer networks and teletypes; daily traffic related situations; FCC rules and regulations; and communications procedures; human relations and personal communications; written communications; oral communications including the ability to effectively explain technical information in a non-technical manner; supervision; conflict resolution; leadership; and mentoring andcoaching.  Ability to effectively organize and prioritize multiple tasks and activities; use complex radio and mobile data computer networks; computer-aided dispatch systems; operate radio dispatch equipment; and operate two-way radio.
