The Wisconsin Department of Transportation in the Division of State Patrol is seeking a highly motivated individual to manage the large and complex portion of the statewide communications system located at the Madison Radio Shop.  The Madison Radio Shop is located at 3629 Pierstorff Street in Madison, Wisconsin. 

Job Duties:   The primary program responsibility is to provide mission critical public safety communications equipment installation services to various public safety agencies (law enforcement, emergency government, emergency medical services, Department of Corrections and Department of Transportation’s Division of Highway Maintenance). The complex radio and computer equipment installed inherently relies on statewide voice and data communications networks and is critical to officer and public safety. Responsibilities include: planning, designing, coordinating and implementing program processes; providing expertise in recordkeeping including documenting completed installation designs and related parts, equipment use and replacement of components; and instructing personnel in operating, maintaining and using complex electronics and communications equipment directly related to an enterprise installation program.

Special Notes:   Prior to a final offer of hire is made, the employer will verify that the applicant has a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License and a good driving record.  Due to the nature of this psoition, applicants will be required to consent to an extensive background investigation which will include fingerprinting.  In addition, this position involves bending, stooping, climbing, twisting, maneuvering in small spaces and climbing ladders. The work requires physical dexterity to install communications equipment in hard-to-reach inaccessible locations. It requires the physical strength to lift mobile units weighting approximately fifty pounds and placing them in the trunk compartment of motor vehicles. 

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Project evaluation and analysis principles and techniques and the ability to apply them to resolve complex issues and problems.  Supervision and management techniques including evaluating work performance; becoming familiar with subordinates daily activities; adult training and motivation; and scheduling, coordinating and planning the work of others.  Oral and written communication skills including instructing and communicating with technical and non-technical personnel internal and external to the agency.  Electronic theory and practices including voice and data wireless radios; mobile data computers: emergency siren and lighting equipment for police vehicles; microprocessor theory and application; and ability to diagnose communication problems.
