Starting salary is $40,373 per year plus excellent benefits. Add-on pay is available for credits that are above what is needed for certification. This position is included in pay schedule and range 13-05. A six month probationary period will be required. Our teachers work twelve months per year.

This position is located at the Stanley Correctional Institution in Stanley, Wisconsin (Chippewa County).


The Department of Corrections administers Wisconsin’s state prisons, community correctional centers, and juvenile corrections programs. It supervises the custody and discipline of all prisoners in order to protect the public and seeks to rehabilitate offenders and reintegrate them into society.

Job Duties:   Under the general supervision of the Education Director, the incumbent will facilitate and manage classroom instruction in Adult Basic Education emphasizing reading, writing, math, HSED preparation and Employability Skills; keep appropriate records; report appropriate progress, and perform institution duties. This position will also instruct Vocational Academic classes.

Special Notes:   

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application. The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Certification or eligibility for certification from the Wisconsin Technical College System in #850 Adult Basic Education and #801 Communication Skills or #809 Social Sciences. Applicants do not need to possess current licensure from WTCS, rather you must possess the credits and work experience (listed below) that would find you eligible to obtain certification once you are hired (you will obtain actual certification after date of hire).


Eligibility for WTCS Certification #850 includes: Applicant must meet one of the three areas listed below in order to move forward in the selection process 1) Bachelor’s degree in elementary education (this excludes Art, Music, or Physical Education) or 2) Bachelor's degree in special education or 3) Bachelor's degree in any area as long as you have 20 credits in Communication, History, Math, Science, Reading, or Social Science AND a total of 6 semester credits of teaching methods, including at least one credit in reading methods. The 6 semester credits of teaching methods and reading methods must be completed prior to application in order to be found eligible. The 20 credits need to be from one single area listed above, not a combination of all. Please ensure your transcript shows that your degree was granted and the date. Music, Art, Physical Education, and Business are not considered academic areas.


Eligibility for WTCS Certification #801 includes: Bachelor’s degree with twenty semester credits in any combination of English, Reading, Journalism, Speech (not drama or theater) or Communications, including at least twelve credits drawn from the areas of A) reading, B) literature and/or composition and C) speaking


Eligibility for WTCS Certification #809 includes: Bachelor's degree with at least a minor or twenty semester credits drawn from the recognized social science disciplines of Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Economics, History, Anthropology, Geography, or Philosophy, with a minimum of twelve credits in the discipline being taught.


All candidates must have one year (2,000 hours) of paid work experience outside the field of education. This work experience can come from multiple jobs, as long as it totals one year. You must indicate if the experience was full time or part time in order for us to calculate the one full time year.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   


  • Knowledge of open-entry, open-exit, individualized instructional methods and techniques.

  • Knowledge of instructional content for Reading skill development and verbal and written communications.

  • Knowledge of adult education theories and practices.

  • Knowledge of socio-psychological cultural factors for incarcerated students.

  • Knowledge of written, oral and non-verbal methods of communication.

  • Knowledge and skills in the use of the Wisconsin Instructional Design System (WIDS).

  • Knowledge of technology based instructional delivery methods to include computer-based instruction, interactive video and distance education delivery.

  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn about computers and appropriate software.
