The Department of Natural Resources is pleased to announce a special management opportunity: The Division of Air and Waste is searching for a new Bureau Director for their Waste and Materials Management group, located in our headquarters facility in historic downtown Madison, WI.

The ideal candidate is a progressive, effective communicator and big picture thinker with proven skills in increasing program efficiencies. We are also looking for someone with demonstrated leadership capabilities in environmental or natural resource areas. Does this describe you? If so, we invite you read on.

Job Duties:   The Waste Management Program in partnership with the public, industry and other government agencies protects public health and the environment by encouraging recycling, waste minimization and pollution prevention. They ensure proper management of solid and hazardous wastes and mining activities and work on voluntary compliance and participation in preferred waste management practices by providing a balance of technical assistance and compliance assurance activities.


The Waste and Materials Management Bureau Director administers the overall program to include the direction and oversight for all policy development, program administration, planning, legislative and intergovernmental liaison and personnel and fiscal management related to the proper management of waste, waste management and mining reclamation. This position also represents the DNR in external contacts with the Executive Office, legislature, local government leaders, federal agencies as well as a wide variety of public groups and associations.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   


  • Professional level experience in environmental protection programs.

  • Solid program management skills including policy development, analysis and implementation.

  • Critical thinking skills demonstrating the ability to be progressive and strategic.

  • Established coaching and mentoring skills for development of individuals, teams and groups.

  • Strong performance management skills which pertain to individuals, teams, projects, and or services and involve the development and oversight of accountability measures, evaluation methods, monitoring processes, and quality improvement of business processes and services.

  • Effective and proven communication skills - both oral and written.

  • Proven ability to build new relationships and partnerships through trust, negotiation and conflict management.
