Waste Management Specialists perform activities related to the management of solid and hazardous waste, recycling, non-metallic mining and green tier in an assigned geographic area. Duties may include, but are not limited to inspecting small demolition landfills and other non-landfill solid waste facilities. Reviewing, approving or denying of plans and specifications for small demolition landfills and other non-landfill regulated solid waste facilities. Conducting audits of municipal recycling and non-metallic mining programs; conducting hazardous waste inspections. Performing Material Recovery Facility inspections; providing technical and outreach assistance; initiating and participating in enforcement activities. Assisting in policy development and guidance for the solid waste, hazardous waste, recycling and non-metallic mining programs, and providing assistance and support to eligible businesses on green tier, innovation, prevention of waste generation, and beyond compliance initiatives. Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Positions in these classifications typically require the following types of knowledge and skills. Knowledge of solid and hazardous waste management, recycling, groundwater management; biological, chemical, natural, envrionmental/earth science principles. These positions also require knowledge of state laws, administrative rules, and policies that pertain to waste management.
