The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) Department of Biological Sciences is currently seeking a PART TIME (75%) PROJECT  Microbiology Laboratory Technician - Senior.  UWM, a doctoral/research intensive university, is Wisconsin’s premier public urban university and offers a comprehensive liberal arts and professional education at the undergraduate and graduate level to its 30,000 students.  UWM takes pride in being a student-centered institution that is deeply committed to diversity in its student body, faculty, staff, and programs.  UWM’s 93-acre campus is located on Milwaukee’s upper east side, one of the city’s most attractive residential areas and home to many faculty, staff and students. Job Duties:   This position is the principal technician in a new laboratory that focuses on spatial organization of proteins within bacteria.  The Microbiology Laboratory Technician Senior independently performs DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) subcloning, PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) cultures, microorganisms and performs gel electrophoresis.  Additionally, this position will order and maintain departmental equipment and supplies and mentor and train technical staff.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Successful applicants will have a general knowledge and understanding of microbiology principles, practices, and methods; basic molecular biology skills and a familiarity with and the ability to safely operate basic laboratory equipment and instruments.  The incumbent must have the ability to effectively train, guide and motivate subordinates; the ability to follow oral and written instructions; the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; the ability to use computer word processing, spreadsheet and database software and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.  Experience with PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), DNA cloning and site-directed mutagenesis is critical as well as experience working with Pseudomonas aeruginosa; experience with fluorescent microscopy and experience in the analysis of protein expression and localization.  Applicants must have the ability to keep current and accurate records; skills in recording data into database systems; the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously; the ability to stand for long periods of time, while working in the laboratory and the ability to provide courteous professional customer service to internal and external clientele.
