We are seeking applications to fill a part time Teacher-Physical Education and/or Health position at the SPRITE House, a Division of Juvenile Corrections facility located on County M in Oregon, Wisconsin (Dane County). Work schedule for this position includes day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts. The work schedule will vary because SPRITE students are at the SPRITE facility one-third of the time and in the field two-thirds of the time. Employees can expect to work part or all of two weekends each month, may work a shift from 8 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in one pay period and 4:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the second pay period of the month. Employee may be occasionally required to work 16 hours a day and sleep on the ground in proximity of offenders for up to five consecutive nights in any month of the year. The Department of Corrections administers Wisconsin’s state prisons, community correctional centers, and juvenile corrections programs. It supervises the custody and discipline of all prisoners in order to protect the public and seeks to rehabilitate offenders and reintegrate them into society. Job Duties: Under the general administrative supervision of the Experiential Recreation Supervisor and the professional program direction of the Education Director of Ethan Allen School, this position is responsible for developing and implementing a program of experiential educational services to meet SPRITE students’ physical education and health needs. SPRITE is a short-term, adventure-based experiential educational program for juveniles previously placed at a juvenile correctional institution or directly placed from counties. This position provides curriculum driven individual and group instruction and evaluates students’ progress. This position completes all required documentation related to student assessments, maintains records and reports, monitors and manages student behavior, and facilitates experiential activities. This position supervises SPRITE students and provides services as part of a team to manage daily administrative responsibilities.The individual employed for this position must possess a valid Wisconsin driver’s license at the time of hire. Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application. The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting. Special Requirement: Candidate must possess Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction licensure or be eligible to obtain licensure with an effective date of not later than March 2010 to teach at the Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence or Early Adolescence-Adolescence Level in Subjects 530 (Physical Education) and/or 910 (Health). Physical Requirements: This position requires the employee to be in good physical condition. Employee must be capable of hiking uneven terrain, camp in all types of weather, work at heights on a Ropes Challenge Course and climb vertical cliffs of 100’ during a rescue operation. Employee must be able to stand for the majority of the day and work outdoors in all weather typical of Wisconsin including temperatures ranging from -30 to 100 F. Job may require physically controlling or restraining young healthy offenders while trying to subdue fighting or applying restraints to maintain security. Work Conditions: Much of the work in this position takes place outdoors in all seasons. The work schedule will vary because SPRITE students are at the SPRITE facility one-third of the time and in the field two-thirds of the time. Employees can expect to work part or all of two weekends each month, may work a shift from 8 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in one pay period and 4:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the second pay period of the month. Student population differs each month and typically has a wide range of academic abilities. Employee may need to clean up messes made by offenders in any environment the program travels. Job may require the cleaning up of body fluids, spills, and other potentially infectious material in accordance with Infectious Disease Prevention policies.
