The Department of Agriculture, Trade & Consumer Protection works to protect, preserve, and promote Wisconsin’s $59 billon agricultural industry.  Our laboratory analyzes samples from throughout the state to monitor and protect our water and soil and to ensure food safety and animal and plant health.

The laboratory is conveniently located on University Ave. within walking distance from Hilldale Mall and with easy access to area bike trails and the Madison Metro bus line.

Job Duties:   

·         Analyze soil, vegetation and other matrices for pesticide and/or industrial chemical residues


·         Confirm any reported residues by recognized procedures including GC/MS, TLC, or Multiple Column Chromatography


·         Provide support in the analysis of groundwater for pesticide residues and/or industrial toxins


·         Write comprehensive reports of work performed and results obtained

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   

Ideal candidates will have:


·         Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of analytical chemistry


·         Knowledge of the theory, operation, maintenance and calibration of Gas Liquid Chromatographs, High Performance Liquid Chromatographs, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometers and UV-Vis Spectrophotometers


·         Knowledge of the principles of mass spectroscopy


·         Knowledge of laboratory safety practices


·         Effective record keeping skills and familiarity with computer software (e.g., word processing, databases, spreadsheets, etc.)
