UWM is currently seeking a full-time Network Support Technician in the Network & Operations Services Department within the Division of University Information Technology Services (UITS), which provides campus technology core infrastructure for recruitment, teaching, learning, and research. Visit www.uits.uwm.edu to learn more.

UWM serves over 30,000 students and 5,000 faculty and staff. We're located on a 93-acre campus in a residential neighborhood near the shores of Lake Michigan, just minutes from downtown Milwaukee. Visit the University Web site at www.uwm.edu.

Job Duties:   Under the general supervision of the Network Operations Supervisor, the Network Support Technician is responsible for the planning, installation, maintenance, and operation of UWM's telecommunications networks, including campus-wide data and wireless networks as well as Centrex voice networks.

The incumbent will provide design and installation services for UWM data, wireless, and voice networks; consult with campus customers to determine requirements and discuss alternatives; document specifications for the necessary hardware and software to implement appropriate networking solutions; and coordinate and monitor network installation with internal and external groups (i.e. University Information Techology Services, Facility Services, outside contractors, etc.). In addition, the person in this role will design, test, debug, release, and document network additions; verify that installations are completed according to industry standards; and maintain comprehensive records of requests, work performed, and inventory.

The Network Support Technician will also perform support and maintenance services for UWM data, wireless, and voice networks; identify, troubleshoot, and resolve network issues; design systems to enable others to run routine diagnostic tests in order to resolve network problems; establish and coordinate planned maintenance periods for patch and upgrade implementations; and maintain comprehensive technical support documentation. This position manages and/or is a member of technical project teams; communicates project status, problem status, and problem resolution information; and participates in professional development opportunities.

Special Notes:   Employment will require a criminal background check. A pending criminal charge or conviction will not necessarily disqualify an applicant. In compliance with the Wisconsin Fair Employment Act, the University does not discriminate on the basis of arrest or conviction record. Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Well-qualified candidates will possess knowledge of data communications, network technology and protocols; personal computers and their network interfaces; basic electronics; telecommunications hardware and software; ISDN voice, data circuit and data packet circuits, NT1s and Terminal adapters, and related end-use equipment; Central Office/PBX switch and line features and inter-operability with telephones, fax machines, answering machines, key systems and line status indicators; and RS-232 signaling and asynchronous modems. Other knowledge critical to success in this position includes knowledge of intra-building and inter-building communication alternatives; the termination of fiber and other communication media; and project management disciplines and best practices.

Required skills include effective testing techniques; excellent record-keeping skills; and strong verbal and written communication skills. The Network Support Technician must be able to use and understand sophisticated, complex diagnostic network equipment; effectively and credibly communicate with various audiences (i.e. team members, collaborators, student staff, functional users, etc.); work both independently and in a team setting; multi-task effectively; and change priorities as required.
