Starting salary will be between $28,029 and $37,000 annually, depending upon qualifications, plus excellent benefits. A six-month probationary period will be required. This classification is included in the Professional Fiscal and Staff Services Bargaining Unit of the Wisconsin Professional Employees Council and is assigned to Pay Schedule/Pay Range 07-05.

Do you have outstanding writing skills, including experience in a variety of formats and voices? Do reporters listen when you have a press release or story to pitch? Have you handled incoming media inquiries? The Wisconsin Department of Tourism seeks a Communications Specialist to assist the integrated marketing team with generating, editing and managing public relations materials, promotional content, and business correspondence, as well as handling daily media relations tasks.

Job Duties:   This is an opportunity to play an important role in contributing to the Wisconsin Tourism economy and the state's most visible marketing arm by assisting with the Department's fully integrated campaign of public relations, media relations, online communication, visitor information and advertising. This position will be under the general direction of the Manager of the Marketing and Communications Bureau which is housed at the Department of Tourism's central office located in downtown Madison. Writing is at the center of much of the work, with responsibilities for all styles of writing, from publicity to collateral. Organizing media interviews and speaking engagements for Department spokespeople is included in this position, as is support in securing, organizing and disseminating Department photography and preparing PowerPoint presentations. This position will also support the marketing team in executing the annual marketing plan.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   This position requires excellent oral and written communications skills, excellent writing and editing skills, with a keen eye for research and ability to tailor writing style to specific audiences. First-hand experience in effectively working with reporters is desired. This position requires solid organizational skills and good computer skills, with knowledge of word processing, e-mail, spreadsheets, PowerPoint software, website editing and data base software. The candidate for this position must be able to gather and analyze information and work within established processes and guidelines.
