Starting salary is between $45,088 and $74,397 annually depending on qualifications plus a very competitive benefits package. A 12-month probationary period is required. This classification is in schedule/range 81-03.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation in the Division of State Patrol is conducting a recruitment for a 2nd shift Police Communications Supervisor for a vacancy located in the Southwest Region.  The Southwest Region includes staff located in Deforest and Tomah.  This position will be physically located at  911 W. North Street in DeForest Wisconsin (Dane County).

Job Duties:   This position primarily works second (2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.) shift and shares overall supervisory responsibility for employees working all three shifts.  This includes: assisting with the hiring and training of communications personnel; providing liaison and technical expertise between the office and various public agencies; assisting in defining and developing policies and procedures; and is responsible for the administrative functions relating to communications.

Special Notes:   The work in the Communications Center involves exposure to members of the public who may be hostile and pose a potential physical hazard. The work is often stressful due to accidents, fires, storms, emergencies, public disorders, etc.

This position will be assigned primarily the 2nd shift and may be required to work additional or alternate shifts including days, midnights, weekends and holidays. 

Continual and constant concentration is required to insure responses to all calls, signals and messages. Considerable discretion is exercised in the scheduling and assigning of duties to personnel working in this area. Flexibility is necessary to adjust to both predictable and unpredictable emergencies which communication personnel must handle. This position has the responsibility to exercise personal judgement in setting priorities and levels of response to multiple situations and operational demands from a variety of sources.

A criminal background check will be conducted during the initial stages of the hiring process. Applicants with felony convictions will not be considered unless they have received a pardon. Hired applicants will be subject to a hearing examination and fingerprinting. In addition, applicants may be required to take a typing (at least 25 words per minute to pass) and work simulation test.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Computer applications (CAD, phone systems, security systems, digital radio logging system, etc.); and making instantaneous decisions based on minimal information regarding hazardous radioactive materials, natural and man-made disasters and civil disturbances. Knowledge of law enforcement computer networks and teletypes; daily traffic related situations; FCC rules and regulations; and communications procedures; human relations and personal communications; written communications; oral communications including the ability to effectively explain technical information in a non-technical manner; supervision; conflict resolution; leadership; and mentoring andcoaching.  Ability to effectively organize and prioritize multiple tasks and activities; use complex radio and mobile data computer networks; computer-aided dispatch systems; operate radio dispatch equipment; and operate two-way radio.
