The Department of Corrections administers Wisconsin's state prisons, community correctional centers, and juvenile corrections programs.  It supervises the custody and discipline of all prisoners in order to protect the public and seeks to rehabilitate offenders and reintegrate them into society. 


Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution (PDCI), located in Crawford county (Area 12), has a Power Plant Operator-Senior vacancy.  

Job Duties:   

Under the general supervision of the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, this position operates the Centralized Power Plant as the only employee on shift.  This position is responsible for the complete operation of a full range of equipment used in the generation of steam heat by high pressure gas fueled boilers.  The incumbent will function independently when the supervisor is not available and will also perform other maintenance duties as assigned.

Special Notes:   

Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application.  The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection.  Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting. 

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   

Considerable knowledge of gas and oil fires, steam boilers, steam flow meters, water meters, pressure gauges, temperature gauges and automatic boiler controls; considerable knowledge of the operation and use of safety devices; considerable knowledge of feed water heaters, feed water pumps and forced draft fans; skill in making repairs and adjustments on all power plant equipment; knowledge of electric generators, electronic panels and electrical distribution; knowledge of power plant occupational hazards and safety precautions for high-pressure power plant operations; ability to operate all plant equipment in case of emergency; knowledge of boiler and auxiliary equipment such as compressors, blowers and fuel pumps, water and vacuum pumps and steam condensers; physical ability to perform manual labor, climb, bend, crawl, etc.
