Starting pay is $14.894 per hour. A 12-month probationary period is required. Pay Schedule/Range 05-31.

A Psychiatric Care Technician (PCT) works in inmate/patient housing units performing a combination of treatment and security functions. PCTs interact with inmates/patients to promote development and improvement of daily living skills and social skills to facilitate behavior changes.

Positions are located at the Department of Health Services (DHS); Division of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (DMHSAS); Mendota Mental Health Institute; Madison, Wisconsin Resource Center (WRC); Winnebago and Sand Ridge Secure Treatment Center; Mauston.  The employment list established as a result of this recruitment will be used to fill vacancies that may occur in these areas within the next six months or longer.

Job Duties:   A Psychiatric Care Technician may be expected to supervise and monitor inmate/patient behavior; counsel inmates/patients; maintain records; conduct searches; assist with escorting and transporting of inmates/patients; apply prescribed physical control techniques as necessary to control and secure a safe environment; and participate in the development and implementation of treatment plans and therapeutic activities for individual inmates/patients or inmate/patient groups.

Special Notes:   A criminal background check will be conducted prior to appointment. Applicants with certain criminal offenses will not be eligible for these positions. Due to the nature of these positions, a pre-employment medical examination will be required to determine the presence of any physical/medical conditions which might adversely affect performance as a Psychiatric Care Technician. Individuals will then be required to undergo a physical training standards test.  Appointment is contingent upon passing this test.  After being appointed, an academic training program will be administered.  Applicant must demonstrate academic proficiency by the end of the training period. For positions at WRC, the training period includes a seven-week pre-service training program at the Corrections Training Center followed by two weeks of on-the-job training . Individuals selected by WRC and Sand Ridge Secure Treatment Center (SRSTC) will also be exposed to mace (CN) and CS gas during the training program.  In addition, individuals selected by SRSTC will be exposed to OC (pepper spray).

Special Requirements: 1) 18 years of age or older upon appointment; 2) a valid driver's license upon appointment; 3) ability to meet physical training standards (includes 1 ½ mile timed run, sit-ups and push-ups); and 4) applicants with a conviction record will be asked to discuss this record.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Ability to read and understand English; ability to understand and follow instructions; ability to observe inmates/patients and maintain accurate records; knowledge of security techniques; written and verbal communication skills; and knowledge of the dynamics of interpersonal skills.

How To Apply:   Reminder: You may only take this exam ONCE every six months! The examination for this position will be given only once on the test date. No one will be admitted after the administration of the examination has begun.

A multiple-choice exam will be administered on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 8:30 a.m. or at the Make-up Exam Center on Monday, August 16, 2010 at 5:00 p.m.

    • After you complete the on-line pre-registration process, you will receive a confirmation notice immediately via e-mail, if you provided an e-mail address.  If you do not provide an e-mail address, you will need to write down your Wisc.Jobs Applicant ID number and bring it with you to the exam center.  Note:  If you do not receive a confirmation notice, please contact the Employment Services Center at ESC@wisconsin.gov or (608) 266-1731 before the registration deadline date.  We are not responsible for undeliverable e-mails or incomplete registrations.

      If you are unable to pre-register on-line, contact the pre-registration phone line at (608) 266-1536, please make sure you allow ample time to receive and return your application material by the deadline date.  (On-line registration is preferred).

      Note:  The deadline for pre-registration is August 9, 2010.  If application material is not received by August 9th or if you have not pre-registered, you will not be able to test.

      Retest:  The retest waiting period for this exam is 6 months from the date of your last examination.  You are not eligible to retest if you took this exam on or after April 10, 2010.

      Reuse:  The reuse period for this exam is one year from the date of your last examination.  You may reuse your score if you took this exam on or after August 8, 2009.  For more informaton on score reuse, please read "Exam Score Reuse".
