The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resource’s Forestry program plays an important role within the larger forestry community and supports the State’s ecological, social, and economic vitality. The Division plans, coordinates and administers a wide variety of forestry programs focused on the management, protection, health, improvement, and sustainable use of Wisconsin's forests, as well as the protection of life, property and resources from wild fire. The employment eligibility list created from this recruitment will be used to staff vacancies which may occur throughout the state during the next six to twelve months or longer. Job Duties: Forestry Technicians work independently to assist Foresters providing high quality forestry services and forest fire management. Technicians apply technical forestry knowledge to determine needs for installation and/or application of forest management practices on public and non-industrial private lands. They also perform public safety forest fire protection duties.Examples of duties performed: Analyze data, map woodlands, determine timber volumes and mark timber to be harvested; provide technical services in support of forest tax law; designate trees to be removed based on prescribed timber and management needs; prepare and recommend reforestation based on Sustainable Forestry principles; examine woodlands and make recommendations for protection from and control of insect and disease attacks, fire and grazing; operate and maintain fire control heavy trucks and crawler tractors; train and direct fire fighters; coordinate local fire plans. Most positions will require a valid driver's license and some will require a commercial driver's license (CDL) permitting operation of vehicles over 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight and air brake operations. Some positions will also require meeting certain medical/physical fitness standards and the successful completion of a DNR administered Physical Fitness Test Battery. Complete details on medical and physical fitness requirements and testing procedures will be mailed to all successful candidates along with their examination results. Hours could vary due to Forestry emergencies. Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Applied forestry for Lakes States forest types; basic Silviculture systems; timber cruising and marking principles and practices; tree identification and land description principles; operation and maintenance of forestry and fire fighting equipment; principles of wildland fire behavior; map reading; tree planting; radio communication; basic math and accounting principles. A multiple-choice exam will be administered on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 8:30 a.m. or at the Make-up Exam Center on Monday, August 16, 2010 at 5:00 p.m.Pre-registration is required.
