The Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired (WCBVI) Outreach Team is currently seeking a full-time year-round Teacher of the Visually Impaired. This position is located at 1700 W State Street, Janesville. The WCBVI operates the Wisconsin School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (WSBVI) residential school for state residents ages three to twenty who are blind or have visual impairments. The school provides academic and career education on site. WCBVI also offers instructional and technical assistance, teaching materials and evaluations of pupils to local school districts and other agencies through the outreach program. Job Duties: This position's main duties are to coordinate, plan for, and provide individualized instruction to students who are blind or visually impaired, including those with multiple disabilities ages 3 to 6 enrolled in the early childhood practices and environments addressing needs unique to sensory impairment program (Little PEANUTS). Under the direction of the WSBVI Principal and in accordance with the Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards, the individualized education program (IEP) and best practice recommendations from the field of visual impairment, evaluate and align student skills and needs, participate in preparing measurable goals and objectives with local school districts, follow through with and/or direct the provision of instruction and complete progress reports. Coordinate consultation and collaboration with WCBVI/WSBVI staff, other professionals and parents to ensure that all student needs are communicated and met. Work closely with other WSBVI and local educational agency (LEA) instructors in a team approach in order to deliver the most effective programming for students. As appropriate, travel to local school districts or homes to observe students and collaborate with family and LEA staff. Directing and coordinating staff activities is required to provide leadership, direction and a collaborative environment for other staff working in the program. Coordinate professional development opportunities for the Little PEANUTS staff. Plan, provide and assign vision specific instruction in areas of expanded core curriculum while overseeing the planning and preparation of daily lessons and instructional materials that meet individual student IEP goals. Provide direction for the integration of Little PEANUTS into the flow of the WCBVI/WSBVI culture where applicable to participate in school activities and celebrations, picture day, etc. and connect parents to the school as a whole. Licensure or eligibility for licensure in Visual Impairments (825) by the Department of Public Instruction is required. Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the impact of visual impairment on development; the role of the environment in facilitating development; appropriate teaching methods to use with young students who are blind and visually impaired, including core and expanded core curriculum; early childhood curriculum and practices; appropriate materials and adaptations necessary to teach young children with visual impairments; state and federal guidelines for IEP assessment; exceptional education needs of children who have additional disabilities including blindness; and the sensory system, sensory integration, sensory diets and therapeutic protocols. Ability to work cooperatively with parents, local school districts and WSBVI staff on programs and challenges associated with student needs; lead other staff in a shared vision; observe and carry out all school rules and policies; attend to the needs of young students such as diapering, lifting, and carrying and sitting on the floor for extended periods; and implement/infuse music into daily schedule. Knowledge of and the ability to learn age-appropriate assistive technology applications.
