The Department of Public Instruction is currently filling a Child Care Counselor 1 school year position at the Wisconsin School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (WSBVI); 1700 West State Street, Janesville. Anticipated hours of work will be Sunday, 3:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and Monday through Thursday, 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. (The shift may change due to program needs.) The employment register established from this recruitment will be used to fill multiple full-time and part-time vacancies that occur at WSBVI during the next six months. Design, implement, and reinforce instructional/behavioral management goals and objectives in daily living skills for visually impaired/disabled children in a residential setting. Work with children to develop interpersonal skills, study habits, leisure and recreation skills in the after school hours. Assist and supervise students in a structured and non-structured setting. Maintain a healthy, safe, and secure environment. Using hands-on techniques, actively participate, instruct and supervise students in the pool environment. Provide supervised transport of students on buses or in state owned vehicles as required. Part of the selection process will include a criminal background check. This position requires lifeguard certification upon completion of probation and a valid driver’s license upon appointment. Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge in human developmental processes, behavior management, daily living skills, recreational activities; safety issues in caring for visually impaired/disabled children; ability to assist with recreational swim activities; effective oral, written, and adaptive communication methods; effective interpersonal strategies; and limitations imposed by visual impairment and the interacting relationships with other disabilities.
