Applicants with current State of Wisconsin Social Worker Certification or Licensure will be hired at a starting annual salary of $39,915 per year. These positions include an excellent State benefits package. A twelve-month probationary period will be required. Schedule and Range 12-06, 12-08. Starting pay for current state employees may vary and will depend on applicable rules in the Compensation Plan, Statutes, and Administrative Code.
Special Qualifications:
Applicant must be certified or licensed as a Social Worker by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services or possess a temporary certification (or in-training)in order to be considered for these positions. Full certification must be received within 12 months of hire.

As a certified or licensed Social Worker, you can make a positive difference in the lives of Wisconsin's incarcerated youth and adults. The Department of Corrections has full-time and part-time Social Worker Corrections positions at our institutions throughout the State of Wisconsin.

Current Vacancies:  Multiple positions available statewide. 

Eligible candidates will be invited to participate in interviews for vacant positions as they occur in areas of the state where the candidate has indicated an interest on the application form. Please check only the counties for which you are truly interested. 

The Department of Corrections administers Wisconsins state prisons, community correctional centers, and juvenile corrections programs. It supervises the custody and discipline of all prisoners in order to protect the public and seeks to rehabilitate offenders and reintegrate them into society.

Position Summary:   

  • assess and evaluate risk/treatment plans by utilizing institution/community counseling, educational, religious, self-help, and other resources

  • provide direct counseling services to inmates and their families

  • assist inmates in developing meaningful, workable release plans

  • maintain records and prepare written reports for assessment and evaluation, parole commission, courts, etc.

  • work in conjunction with parole agents to develop release plans

  • referral to community resources to match offender need with appropriate services

  • provide assessment, treatment, education, and counseling, individually and in group, in areas such as chemical abuse, anger management, domestic violence, marriage, divorce, and/or chemical dependency

  • assist in formulating relapse prevention plans/actions

    • Special Notes:   

      Individuals considered for these positions must be certified or licensed as a Social Worker or have a Temporary (or Training) Social Worker Certification through the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services .   Applicants without these credentials cannot be considered.  Applicants hired with a Temporary or In-Training Certificate must obtain their Permanent Certificate within twelve months of employment . 

      Per Wisconsin State Statutes 440.08 (2), the required renewal date for the Social Worker is 02/28/odd years.  Should you receive your initial credential in the months leading up to this date, you are still required to renew your license by the statutorily defined date.

      Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application, hire, and throughout their employment.

      The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection.  Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.

      The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screens.  Any applicant who is offered employment in a position which requires a pre-employment drug screen must pass the screen as a contingency to employment.  Applicants who fail or refuse the drug screen will not be given further consideration for employment.


      To be considered for the Senior level, applicants must have prior experience working as a Social Worker at an independent level; and experience working with offenders.

This is considered an eligibility exam and all eligible applicants will receive a passing civil service score of 70.
