The Department of Health Services (DHS) currently has a vacancy for a Power Plant Operator – Senior at Southern Wisconsin Center (SWC) located in Union Grove.

SWC is a state operated Intermediate Care Facility for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities. SWC provides a wide variety of programs and services designed to assist and prepare individuals to live successfully in the setting that best meets their needs. Located in southern Wisconsin near Union Grove, SWC brings together a rich history and state of the art treatment approaches for the new millennium. This position offers a top-rate benefits package including a state retirement plan and excellent health insurance.

Position Summary:   This position operates, services and maintains combination oil and gas fired high pressure steam boilers and associated equipment such as boiler feed and condensate pumps, emergency generators, water softeners, de-alkalizers, reverse osmosis system, and chemical feed pumps. This position also makes routine hourly written reports to insure boiler operation is within proper parameters. This position performs and records water tests and oversees shift operation of all equipment, including operation of potable water wells and equipment.

The hours are primarily 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM with occasional floating shifts and works every other weekend.

Special Notes:   Due to the nature of these positions, all applicants will be required to allow the Department of Health Services to conduct a background check to determine whether the circumstances of any convictions may be related to the job being filled.

Special requirement: Must obtain a Boiler’s License before completion of nine months of employment in this classification.


Minimally qualified applicants will have a strong mechanical aptitude and have the ability to perform manual labor and be able to work overtime, holidays and weekends and additional shifts as needed. Minimally qualified applicants will also have general maintenance, mechanical, and/or industrial work experience.

In addition, well qualified candidates will have:

  • Experience monitoring, maintaining and/or operating boilers.

  • Experience performing minor repairs on power plant operating systems.

  • Experience with servicing and maintaining power plant operating systems.

  • Experience with power tools used in power plant maintenance.
