The Wisconsin Historical Society is seeking an American Indian Nation Liaison to develop and support relationships between the Society and Wisconsin's 12 Indian Nations. This role will assist WHS in reaching its vision to enrich and transform lives through unparalleled access to history for all Wisconsinites. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity in a supportive environment that encourages a work-life balance and provides excellent benefits. There will be the potential for future growth – both in terms of responsibility and program development. This position will have the opportunity to assist in defining and improving outreach programming and creating lasting value for WHS.

Position Summary:   

Under the general supervision of the Director of Special Projects, the American Indian Nation Liaison develops, maintains, and strengthens relationships with American Indians and American Indian nations in Wisconsin; represents the Society on external committees and groups that focus on American Indian concerns; provides advice and expertise to Society staff on American Indian issues and relationships; and leads Society committees and teams that focus on American Indian projects. The Liaison must have thorough knowledge and appreciation for the important impact and contributions American Indians have had and continue to have on Wisconsin; collaborates with American Indian nations as sovereign nations; and respects the unique voice, interests, and concerns of American Indians. During the first several years, the Liaison will focus on the development and  strengthening of relationships between the Society and American Indian nations.

A qualified candidate will have: • Experience serving as a liaison with American Indian Nation (working within varying traditions, culture, and customs). • Experience working with state and federal laws impacting American Indian Nations.

A well-qualified candidate will have: • Experience with the creation, implementation, and/or management of programming at a museum, historic site, and/or cultural venue.
