This position is located at the Department of Health Services (DHS); Division of Care and Treatment Services (DCTS); Mendota Mental Health Institute (MMHI). MMHI is conveniently located on the north side of Madison and offers a beautiful campus environment, convenient free parking and an onsite workout facility.

This position works on 1st shift, hours of 6:00 AM Ė 2:30 PM. Occasional weekends are required.

Note: The register established from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies that occur in the next six months.

Position Summary:   Under general supervision, the Custodian Lead is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks at Mendota Mental Health Institute. Duties include, but are not limited to: operating automatic cleaning equipment, such as automatic scrubbers, sweepers, wall washers, wet/dry vacuums, and carpet-cleaning equipment; mopping, stripping and sealing of floors; cleaning of toilets, showers and furniture; shoveling snow; and replacing light bulbs. This position is a lead worker and directs other custodians responsible for cleaning and maintenance activities.

Special Notes:   Due to the nature of these positions, all applicants will be required to allow the DHS to conduct a background check to determine whether the circumstances of any convictions may be related to the job being filled.

All appointees will be required to receive a TB test, which will be administered by MMHI or medical personnel approved by the facility prior to their start date.

These positions have physical requirements which may include but are not limited to lifting up to 50 lbs, standing, sitting kneeling, climbing ladders, crawling, and stooping.  Applicants may be required to pass a physical evaluation to assess these requirements.


This position requires the following:

  • Ability to train, lead, oversee, and direct staff in the use of proper cleaning techniques, the use of powered cleaning equipment, and cleaning chemicals. 

  • Possess or have the ability to possess a valid Wisconsin driverís license which meet the following criteria in accordance with the State of Wisconsin Fleet Policy:
         - Must have a valid driverís license
         - Minimum of two yearís driving experience
         - Must be eighteen (18) years of age

  • Additionally, the driving record must not reflect the following conditions:
         - Three (3) or more moving violations (with point reductions) and/or at fault accidents in the past two years
         - An OWI or DUI violation within the past year (OWI/DUI violations are for operating a vehicle while under the influence of an intoxicant, controlled substance or other drug).
         - A Suspension or Revocation of the driver license or Expired driver license.

    • Well-qualified candidate will have:

    • Experience using proper cleaning techniques, powered cleaning equipment, and cleaning chemicals. 

    • Ability to plan, layout, and organize cleaning tasks, projects, and schedules in order to accomplish tasks efficiently.

    • Ability to work cooperatively with others and use problem solving processes.
