Salary:
Starting pay is $63,440 to $70,720 annually ($30.50/hour to $34.00/hour). Pay for current state employees may vary based on the State of WI Compensation Plan, which requires additional DPM approval to offer a pay increase to transfer candidates. This position includes an excellent benefits package, including health care, vacation, sick leave, and retirement benefits. This position is non-represented and included in Pay Schedule / Range 15-03. A one-year probationary period may be required.

The Department of Natural Resources excels at protecting and managing Wisconsin’s natural resources while supporting the economy and the well-being of the citizenry. Within DNR, the Division of Forestry works in partnership to administer programs that protect and sustain our forested lands throughout the state, combining technical and financial assistance, planning, research, technology, education, and policy to help meet the many demands on the forest both today and for many years to come. Forest Products Specialists play an important role in achieving our mission by providing expertise and assistance to forest businesses and communities.

This is a great opportunity to use your knowledge of the forest products industry to work face-to-face with stakeholders to support and improve the industry, including fostering job growth, job retention and industry expansion.

There are currently two job opportunities that are located in:
   •  Rhinelander or Tomahawk; and
   •  Spooner or Hayward

Position Summary:   
The Forest Products Specialist collaborates with businesses, organizations, inter-agency teams, and other external and internal stakeholders to support and grow Wisconsin’s forest products industry. Each position specializes in one or more aspects of the forest products industry, such as forest products utilization and marketing; domestic, international and emerging forest products market and business development; renewable energy and woody biomass; and manufacturing process improvement.

The Forest Products Specialist provides technical assistance to the forest industry, including the introduction of new technology and manufacturing practices. In addition, the position conducts an analysis of training needs and assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of training sessions.

The Forest Products Specialist also collaborates on the development of policies related to emerging issues, such as labor availability, transportation, life cycle analysis, ecological services (e.g. carbon markets), renewable energy, woody biomass, and invasive species impacts on wood markets.

Qualifications:   
Applicants must possess the following required qualifications to be eligible for this position:
  •  Forest products industry experience *
  •  Business management experience *

Best-qualified candidates will also possess the following preferred qualifications:
  •  Experience providing consultation services to businesses or organizations
  •  Experience developing policies
  •  Bachelor’s degree in forestry, wood science, paper science, or business management
