The DNR is hiring LTE Foresters who will serve as the Public Lands Forester and the Property Management Forester for the Northern Highlands - American Legion (NHAL) State Forest. Established in 1925 to protect the headwaters of the Wisconsin, Flambeau and Manitowish rivers, the Northern Highland-American Legion (NHAL) State Forest occupies more than 232,000 acres in northern Wisconsin. The Foresters will be responsible for planning, designing, and administering timber sales on the NHAL State Forest and Willow Flowage. This work includes cruising and appraising timber following silvicultural standards, preparing property maps, and completing Timber Sale forms with accordance to State laws and procedures. In addition, these positions will assist with property management duties on the NHAL State Forest and the Willow Flowage. These positions will be responsible for assessing property road network for maintenance and construction needs to accommodate motorized traffic, assisting with ATV trail location determination, design, and development criteria. This work will involve the use of GIS and GPS mapping tools to inventory roads, trails, gates, and other property infrastructure.
This is a limited term (LTE) position. Limited term positions do not automatically lead to or have the same benefits as permanent employment, but this position does offer valuable work experience and an opportunity to learn more about career opportunities with the Department of Natural Resources and the State of Wisconsin. LTE employees are limited to working 1039 hours within a twelve-month period. In order to be considered for this position, you must be a resident of the State of Wisconsin.
Employment will require the selected candidate to pass a background check. The DNR does not sponsor work visas, thus, in compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I-9 form upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Forestry from a school with a SAF accredited curriculum or equivalent as determined by the Chief State Forester. - Experience with practical field forestry procedures including tree I.D., silviculture, regeneration assessments, and reforestation techniques. - Experience with timber sale establishment and administration. - Experience operating machinery such as ATVs, UTVs, chainsaws, and snowmobiles.
