Now is the time to take advantage of this great opportunity. We want you to excel at your job, so we'll provide you with plenty of in-depth training as long as you meet the minimum education requirement and have at least some basic forest land management experience, basic fire training, "soft" skills such as communication and interpersonal sensitivity, and lots of motivation and enthusiasm!

Interviews are anticipated to be held during the week of July 22 in Rhinelander and will only be conducted in-person. Successful candidates will begin working on September 16, 2019. Mark your calendars now!

Position Summary:   
Foresters direct and provide forest management assistance on private lands, state lands and county forests, providing advice and assistance to landowners, property managers and other partners. Forest land management includes forest reconnaissance, management plans, prescriptions, timber sale establishment and administration, timber stand improvement, reforestation and afforestation, forest road development and maintenance, and/or property management.

Most Foresters are also responsible for fire management, which includes fire preparedness, fire suppression, and fire prevention. These positions include fire-line responsibilities such as initial attack; suppression; and various command roles. These positions also provide expert training to Fire Department personnel and other partners. These positions are responsible for planning and conducting prescribed burning activities to achieve habitat and property management objectives.

Successful candidates must pass a background check prior to hire.

Candidates for most positions must also meet medical and physical fitness standards. Complete details on requirements and testing procedures will be provided to candidates who are invited to interview.

Candidates for most positions must be able to obtain and maintain a valid WI driver’s license and meet the requirements to operate a state vehicle.

Many positions have fire-line responsibilities that require the incumbent to respond within 30 minutes to the work station. Specific information will be provided prior to the interview.

Candidates for most positions must be able to obtain and maintain Forest Ranger credentials via in-house training. Credentialed staff will then be expected to enforce basic forestry laws through public contacts and the issuance of citations.

Some positions require the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License within six (6) months of hire.

Wildland fire qualifications/certifications may be required within 18 months to five years after hire.

DNR does not sponsor work visas. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I-9 form upon hire.

Applicants must possess the following required qualifications to be eligible for this position:
  •  Bachelor’s or higher degree in forestry, or the equivalent as determined by the State
     Forester. Click "Preview Assessment" (above) for specific information.
  •  Experience performing forest land management activities, which may be gained
     through an academic training course or camp; internship; temporary summer employment;
     volunteer opportunity; or full-time/on-going employment
  •  Training related to fire management, prescribed fire or fire suppression,
     including structural or wildland fire

Best-qualified candidates will also possess the following preferred qualifications:
  •  Related work experience, as typically gained through full-time/on-going employment
  •  Master’s degree in forestry or natural resources
  •  Qualified/Certified as Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) or Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) based on
     National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) standards
  •  Experience as an Incident Commander on a wildland fire
  •  Experience training others on fire management techniques and equipment
