Salary:
The starting salary is $12.24 per hour, plus excellent low cost benefits. This position is eligible for an additional $0.45 for hours worked between 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., and a weekend differential of $0.60 for hours worked from midnight Friday to midnight Sunday. Pay schedule/range is 03/08. A 12 month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be based on the compensation plan in effect at the time of appointment.

Preview Assessment  

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS); Winnebago Mental Health Institute (WMHI) is recruiting to fill multiple Custodian positions.

Full time positions work primarily weekdays (Monday - Friday), daytime hours (6:00 am to 2:30 pm) but will be required to work once every 16th weekend.  May require occasional early morning or evening work, some holidays, and possible overtime. 

Part time positons work primarily weekdays (Monday - Friday), daytime hours (8:00 am to 4:30 pm.).  Part time positons are .6 FTE (24 hours per week) but may require early morning or evening work, some holidays, and possibly working up to full time hours.   

These position are eligible for an additional $0.45 for hours worked between 6 pm to 6 am, and a weekend differential of $0.60 for hours worked between midnight Friday to midnight Sunday.

The State of Wisconsin benefits for full time employees include at least 3.5 weeks of vacation, 9 paid holidays, ample sick time, a top rated health plan, low-cost insurance options starting at $31/month for single plans and $78/month for family plans after two months of state service, and an exceptional retirement plan. Part time benefits are pro-rated, based on hours worked.

WMHI is a psychiatric hospital providing quality mental health services to children, adolescents and adults. The facility has a beautiful campus located on Lake Winnebago with adjacent walking paths by the lake for employees to use during break periods. There are additional benefits for employees of the facility including a gym, several wellness initiatives, a casual dress code, and other special program events. 

Position Summary:   The custodian is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks at WMHI. Duties include, but are not limited to: operating automatic cleaning equipment, such as automatic scrubbers, sweepers, and wall washers, wet/dry vacuums, and carpet cleaning equipment; stripping and sealing of floors; cleaning of toilets, showers and furniture; shoveling snow; and replacing light bulbs.

Special Notes:   All applicants will be required to allow the Department of Health Services to conduct a background check to determine whether the circumstances of any convictions may be related to the job being filled.

These positions have physical requirements which may include but are not limited to lifting up to 50 lbs, standing, sitting kneeling, climbing ladders, crawling, and stooping.  Applicants may be required to pass a physical evaluation to assess these requirements.

All appointees will be required to receive a TB screening prior to their start date.

Qualifications:   

This position requires the following:

  • Ability to work scheduled hours as needed, which may include weekends, holidays, early morning or early evenings, and overtime as needed.

  • Basic knowledge of cleaning and disinfecting procedures.

  • Ability to use cleaning products and follow appropriate safety/sanitizing procedures including the use of protective equipment and chemical agents.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with others, communicate, and use problem solving processes.

    • Well-qualified candidates will have:
    • Previous experience with custodial and/or housekeeping work.

    • Experience using basic hand tools (e.g. drill, screwdriver, etc.) and custodial equipment (e.g. floor scrubber, Kaivack, carpet cleaner, etc.).
