Salary:
Minimum salary is $15.639 per hour. Pay will be determined in accordance with the provisions of the Security and Public Safety bargaining unit. A six-month probationary period is required. These positions are in pay schedule and range 05-32.

The Department of Corrections administers Wisconsin's state prisons, community correctional centers, and juvenile corrections programs.  It supervises the custody and discipline of all prisoners in order to protect the public and seeks to rehabilitate offenders and reintegrate them into society.  The department currently operates 19 correctional facilities, 16 community correctional centers for adults, and 3 facilities for juveniles. 


This is a competitive promotional exam open only to current classified employees (current state employees) in Wisconsin State Civil Service (including seasonal employees and employees on probation) who are not serving on a limited term or project employment basis. Former employees currently in layoff status may compete in this promotional exam if they would have been eligible to compete prior to layoff. This register will be used to fill vacancies that occur throughout the state.

Job Duties:   Maintain security and care on a shift for male or female inmates of a State Correctional Facility and the Wisconsin Resource Center. Direct the movement, work and leisure activities of inmates. Transport inmates to and from the correctional facility. Interpret and enforce institution rules of conduct. Restore order during disturbances and emergencies. Observe and report on behavior of inmates. Inspect and patrol living quarters and other facility buildings, grounds, and equipment to maintain security. Search inmates and quarters for contraband. Direct the work of other correctional officers. Maintain records and files.

Special Notes:   1) Persons who are promoted to these positions and who have no prior experience as Correctional Officers must meet all the requirements of the entry level Correctional Officer including a background/criminal record check, State of Wisconsin fleet driving eligibility, medical examination, physical fitness test, and successful completion of the seven -week pre-service training program. 2) Convicted felons must have a pardon or Federal waiver to bear firearms. 3) Possession of a valid driver's license upon appointment. NOTE:  The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. 

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Crowd control and security procedures and policies; direction of staff and inmates; inspection and operation of facilities; first aid techniques; terminology associated with the rehabilitation and treatment programs, counseling techniques; correctional program resources for the care and rehabilitation of inmates; effective written and oral communication skills.
