Portage County is accepting applications to establish an eligibility list for Deputy Sheriff. As vacancies occur candidates would be hired from this list.

Job Duties:   This position performs various law enforcement functions including patrol, traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, serving warrants and civil papers.  Potential opportunities exist for Special Response Team, Dive Team, Field Training Officer, technical accident investigation, law enforcement and safety program instructor; K-9 officer, as well as boat, ATV, and snowmobile patrol.

Special Notes:   

Successful candidates will be required to complete and pass all of the following: written exam, personality test, oral interviews, ride along program, comprehensive background investigation, psychological testing, physical exam, and drug screen.


 


Written exam info:  Saturday, January 16, 2010, Portage County Courthouse Annex.  Qualified candidates will receive written notice of the test time.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   

Minimum Qualifications: 



  • U.S. Citizen

  • At least 21 years of age

  • No felony or domestic violence convictions

  • Ability to possess a firearm

  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license with good driving record

  • Good physical condition

  • Vision correctable to 20/20

  • Eligible for immediate certification by Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board

  • High school diploma

  • Minimum of 60 college credits from an accredited school

  • Good verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to perform all essential functions of this position

  • Ability to effectively use all standard law enforcement equipment

  • Previous law enforcement experience preferred, but is not required
