A 12-month probationary period may be required.

The Wisconsin Veterans Home at King (WVHK), is currently recruiting for multiple Custodian positions and one Custodian-Lead position, to clean and sanitize assigned buildings areas on the WVHK campus. The Lead position also performs lead duties for a crew of Custodians. WVHK is a skilled nursing, long-term care facility that specializes in providing comfort, support, and professional medical services to elderly or disabled veterans and their spouses. The facility is located on the picturesque shoreline of the Chain O'Lakes, off Highway 10 between Stevens Point and Appleton. The list of qualified applicants created from this recruitment may be used to fill any vacancies which occur in the next six months.

Position Summary:   

Join the Custodial Services team that keeps WVHK’s living and recreational areas as sanitary and enjoyable homelike environments for Wisconsin veterans!

The Custodian performs manual semi-skilled work associated directly with the performance of a variety of custodial tasks such as cleaning, sweeping, mopping, waxing, vacuuming, dusting, emptying trash, etc. Work is performed under the guidance of a Custodian Lead or under the supervision of a Custodial Services Supervisor.

The Custodian-Lead works closely with building managers and supports the Custodial Services Supervisor by performing the essential function of guiding a crew of custodians in the performance of custodial duties and other general labor tasks and maintaining all WVHK buildings. The Custodian-Lead also serves as a role model for custodians by displaying a professional, courteous and helpful nature. Work is performed under the direction of a Custodial Services Supervisor.

Special Notes:   

This position requires the ability to work in the conditions of the job (e.g., climbing, reaching, bending; performing sustained physical activity; occasionally exerting an excess of 100 pounds of force; using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE); working with loud, shaking and/or vibrating equipment; working on ladders and/or scaffolding, etc.).

One Custodian position a standard schedule of Monday through Friday 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Three Custodian positions work a standard schedule of Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Lead position works a standard schedule of Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with occasional after hours work for larger projects. All positions require working rotating weekends and holidays, and working overtime as needed.

Due to the nature of the position, WDVA will conduct criminal background checks prior to an offer of hire.

Employment in this position is contingent upon passing a pre-employment physical and tuberculosis test.


At both levels, minimally-qualified applicants will have experience:

  • Cleaning; and
  • Using Safety Practices/Controls; and
  • Following Instructions/Standard Operating Procedures; and
  • Managing Work Tasks/Time; and
  • Working as a Member of a Team; and
  • Communicating

Well-qualified Custodian applicants will also have experience:

  • Documenting Activities and Inventory; and
  • Operating and Maintaining Equipment

Minimally-qualified Custodian-Lead applicants will also have experience

  • Performing Custodial Services; and
  • Training Others to Perform Tasks; and
  • Documenting Activities and Inventory; and
  • Operating and Maintaining Equipment; and
  • With Sanitation/Infection Control Principles

Well-qualified Custodian-Lead applicants will also have experience as a team lead.
