Starting pay for the entry level is between $37,356 and $60,382 annually ($17.96 - $29.03 per hour). Starting pay for the advanced level is between $48,630 and $78,686 annually ($23.38 - $37.83 per hour). Pay on appointment for current or former state employees based on the State Compensation Plan. The entry is Pay Schedule/Range 14-14, advanced is 14-13. A 12-month probation period is required.

The Department of Natural Resources is hiring Operation Permit Writers in the Air Management Engineer classification at either the entry or advanced level in the Division of Environmental Management. We anticipate filling three (3) positions in Green Bay and one (1) position in Eau Claire.

Position Summary:   These positions will use engineering principles to review and issue air pollution control construction permits to new, relocated, reconstructed, replaced, revised or modified direct sources and operation permits to these air pollution sources in the State of Wisconsin, or to inspect these sources to ensure they are in compliance with applicable federal and state air pollution control requirements.

Successful candidates will take the initiative creatively and work well with others using communication and negotiation skills in service to the public and to the affected sources. These positions require an engineering approach to problem solving and emission assessment and a general approach to air quality management. These positions works with departmental teams, the public, affected sources, local officials, other state agencies, and the federal government to accomplish work plan goals.

Special Notes:   Employment will require the selected candidate to pass a background check.  DNR does not sponsor work visas, thus, in compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I-9 form upon hire.

Qualifications:   Minimally qualified candidates will meet one of the criteria listed below:
• Registration as a Professional Engineer as determined by the Department of Safety and Professional Services per s. 443.04, Wis. Stats
• A specific record, issued by the professional engineering section of the Department of Safety and Professional Services, showing 4 years or more of experience in engineering work of a character satisfactory to the professional engineering section AND satisfactory completion of the fundamentals of engineering exam
• Has graduated or will graduate by time of appointment from a recognized college or university with a degree in a related engineering field
• Has equivalent professional training and practical experience so as to be deemed a professional engineer as defined in Department of Safety and Professional Services per s. 443.01, Wis. Stats. AND also deemed to be qualified to engage in professional engineering practice as determined by the Department of Safety and Professional Services per s. 443.04 or 443.05, Wis. Stats.
