Become a member of a premier law enforcement agency! The Wisconsin State Patrol is recruiting State Patrol Trooper and Inspector candidates for our 65th Recruit Class. The Wisconsin State Patrol has a proud tradition and an outstanding record of achievement. Since 1939, the State Patrol has been dedicated to promoting highway safety and enhancing the quality of life for all Wisconsin citizens and visitors by providing professional, competent and compassionate law enforcement services.

Successful applicants will participate in approximately 26 weeks (Sunday night through Friday) of paid training ($21.00 per hour) at the State Patrol Academy in Fort McCoy. The 65th Recruit Class will start on September 15, 2019, and graduate on March 20, 2020. Previous recruit classes have ranged in size from 25-50 cadets.

Geographical placement for Trooper and Inspector positions shall be determined by academy class rank with the person having the highest class rank selecting preferred vacancy first. Therefore, selected applicants must be willing to accept any geographical location and either classification (Trooper or Inspector). Upon graduation from the Academy, Troopers and Inspectors may be eligible for moving expense reimbursement, temporary lodging and a stipend of $1,000.

Position Summary:   The Wisconsin State Patrol promotes highway safety and enhances the quality of life for all Wisconsin citizens and visitors by providing professional, competent and compassionate law enforcement services. Some of the services provided are regulation of traffic, prevention of highway crashes, motor carrier safety assistance, school bus inspection and crash reconstruction. Other services include aid to local law enforcement agencies through civil disturbance countermeasures, natural disaster recovery support and communication services, and chemical testing services for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.

State Patrol Troopers and Inspectors will enforce state traffic and criminal laws, administrative rules and regulations, with an emphasis on highway safety and preservation; investigate traffic crashes and provide assistance to motorists and the public, perform emergency services including response to traffic crashes, natural or man-made disasters and civil disorders, represent the State Patrol in all job-related civil and criminal judicial processes and enforce and inspect Motor Carriers for compliance with laws and regulations at permanent scales and mobile enforcement details.

  • PHYSICAL READINESS TESTING: Applicants must pass the physical readiness test to move forward in the hiring process. Physical readiness testing will take place April 6-14, 2019, at Milwaukee Vincent High School and the State Patrol Academy in Fort McCoy. Candidates must schedule their physical readiness test prior to finalizing the application.

    • Please review the requirements and put in the work necessary to either maintain or improve your fitness level to meet/ exceed the minimum physical requirements before the testing dates.

  • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: An extensive driver license and criminal background check will be conducted for candidates moving forward in the hiring process. Applicants with felony convictions or misdemeanor crime of domestic violence convictions will not be considered unless they have received an absolute and unconditional pardon.

  • PRE-EMPLOYMENT MEDICAL EXAM AND PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING: Due to the nature of these positions, a pre-employment medical examination, including drug screening, and psychological testing will be required.

    • Minimum uncorrected vision is 20/100 in each eye. Vision must be correctable to 20/20. Weak eye corrected vision can be 20/30, with binocular vision of 20/20.

    • No more than a 20 decibel hearing loss (uncorrected) in either ear at 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 hertz.

Education Requirement: The educational requirements have changed slightly from past recruitments. Applicants must possess an associate degree from an accredited technical college or have earned at least 60-accredited credits within five (5) full years of their date of initial law enforcement employment.

A maximum of 30 credits may be waived for individuals who have training and/or experience (such as military training) that has been evaluated and provided a college credit recommendation by a group such as the American Council on Education (ACE). Waivers can be requested by completing form DJ-LE-331 and submitting to the Department of Justice.

Authorization to work in the United States: The Wisconsin State Patrol does not sponsor work visas and any selection made from this recruitment will be contingent upon the applicant being able to provide valid status to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Salary and Benefits: We offer excellent benefits, ample vacation time and an exceptional employee assistance program. Starting salary is $21.00 per hour, progressing to $22.00 per hour after graduating from the Academy (six months). Upon completion of a two-year probationary period, the current compensation plan allows for an increase to $23.00 per hour. Master Troopers and Inspectors make up to $31.00 per hour.

Qualifications:   Candidates must meet all minimum employment standards for employment as a law enforcement officer as identified by the Law Enforcement Standards Board. In addition, minimally qualified applicants must have observation and recall; basic mathematics; analytical skills including reasoning and problem solving; interpersonal responsiveness and reliability; oral and written communications; effective work habits; and ability to read and interpret complex written materials such as laws, policies and procedures
